Two approaches to innovation
Two IDF chiefs of staff have recently made statements about innovation, but only one has compared the military to a modern civilian organization.
Aviv Kochavi, current chief of staff:
"One primary goal that I have emphasized is the need for the Intelligence Directorate, like any modern enterprise, to be capable of permanent change. This is in order to adapt to the changing reality. The ability to respond quickly to changes may prove more important than setting long-term goals, which will have to change soon anyway."
Gadi Eizenkot, former chief of staff:
"I believe in conservative innovation. The IDF is not a hi-tech company and not a speedboat. It's an aircraft carrier. It requires innovation, but it must be conservative. Kochavi presented me with his plans. I think he is heading in reasonable directions."
